ORLOV, D.V. YEGOROV Much attention is paid in Russia and worldwide to the new IEC 61850 communication technology which arises a lot of debates. Equipment manufacturers, customers, experts express different opinions and appraisals which vary from “this technology of tomorrow will solve all our problems” to “useless invention lobbied by major vendors”, Against this background, the works on the implementation of this standard have already come to the practical phase: considerable implementation experience of IEC 61850-based systems was gained abroad, some pilot applications exist also in Russia. Most of the manufacturers declare that the standard is supported, and many customers include in their specs the requirement of its unconditional or desirable support.
