Managing the Process of Recovery of Titanium Using a System
of Variable Structure |

The reasons of magnesium and magnesium chloride non-stratification in titanium recovery apparatus are analyzed. The features of temperature control in exothermal reaction and heating zones are discussed, and the mechanism of temperature change with the exothermal reaction zone’s elevation are examined. It is investigated that temperature gradients along the apparatus’ vertical axis and radius are the key reason of magnesium and magnesium chloride non-stratification. For eliminating the non-stratification, the paper offers to stabilize titanium recovery process temperature using a variable-structure system. It discusses the system’s design features and process temperature control algorithm. The algorithm was implemented in a PLC and can be run from operator workstation to improve process control performance.
