Algorithm for Determining Whether a Cluster Belongs to a JPEG File Using Signatures |

The aim of this work is to study methods for identifying individual fragments of computer files and to develop a method for recovering fragmented JPEG files. The developed method allows to determine the belonging of a fi le fragment to the specified format and identify unnecessary (foreign) fragments in the file. This method can be used, among other things, in the tasks of recovering files of this format. The need to recover data arises in cases where the data carrier has been damaged physically or logically. The task is relevant in many areas of activity, including in the field of computer forensics. The article discusses the features of various file systems, methods of storing a file in disk space, logical and physical organization of files. Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that the fact of the presence of file fragmentation is present in all modern file systems. The article presents and discusses the main scenarios for file fragmentation in various file systems. The result of the research at this stage is the establishment of the possibility of data recovery from highly fragmented file systems. To solve the problem posed in the article, the analysis of known data recovery methods was carried out, their advantages and disadvantages were revealed. On the basis of the analysis, an algorithm for determining the cluster membership in the JPEG format has been developed. As a result of theoretical and experimental research, signatures have been obtained that can be used to identify clusters related to a JPEG file. The developed method can be applied to a single cluster, which in turn allows processing the entire file in parallel.
