The main features of the birefringence effect found in crystals with anisotropic properties are considered. The refractive index in this case depends on the direction of radiation propagation. The phenomenon of birefringence has recently been used to create optical acceleration sensors and sensors based on the Faraday and Pockels effects and other electronic devices. With the help of the Faraday effect, the strength of the magnetic direct and alternating currents is measured, and the measurement of the parameters of the strength and voltage of the electric field is carried out using optical sensors created on the basis of the Pockels effect.
