Application of Open Hardware Platforms Arduino
and Raspberry Pi 5 for Rapid Prototyping
of Digital Twins of Industrial Objects |

The article justifies the feasibility of using Arduino microcontroller boards and the Raspberry Pi 5 (RPi 5) singleboard computer as the hardware basis for prototypes of digital twins (DT) of complex technological systems. It shows the
“sensor → Arduino → RPi 5 (Edge) → Cloud” architecture, which provides low latency of local response and high computing
power of cloud simulation. A comparative analysis of performance, energy, and economic indicators is provided, and issues of
reliability, cybersecurity, and scalability are discussed. An experimental test bench based on Arduino Nano Matter and RPi 5
is described, implementing a digital twin of a conveyor line using NVIDIA Omniverse. Test results confirm that open hardware
platforms are capable of providing a polling cycle of ≤ 20 ms and an accuracy forecast of ±2 % with a 70 % reduction in
capital costs compared to industrial IPC/PLC solutions.
